This is what galaxy M83 would look like if one were able to view only its neutral hydrogen gas without stars or nebulae. The map was made with the Very Large Array radio telescope operating at a wavelength of 21 centimeters. Red-colored areas have the most neutral hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas is concentrated in the spiral arms of this Sc type galaxy. Because the central bulge contains so little neutral hydrogen, it is invisible in this image.
